Whangārei Station

Jake Brown brings over 10 years as a career firefighter and 18 years as a volunteer to the New Zealand Fire Brigades Institute Council. He currently serves as a Career Senior Firefighter at Whangārei Station and volunteers with the Whangārei Heads Volunteer Fire Brigade, recently being appointed as Chief Fire Officer. His operational background is strengthened by earlier service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as an Aviation Firefighter, where he developed a strong foundation in discipline, teamwork, and technical proficiency.

Jake plays an active role in building capability across his district, contributing as an Area Trainer with a focus on the Type 4 aerial appliance and the Command Unit. He is recognised for his practical, approachable style and his commitment to helping firefighters grow their confidence and competence across a range of operational skills.

Jake’s experience across both career and volunteer environments gives him a balanced understanding of the diverse needs of brigades. He is committed to supporting learner development, strengthening operational excellence, and contributing to positive and supportive station cultures.

Outside of work, Jake and his young family live on a small farm in Northland, where they enjoy a simple, hands-on lifestyle. When he’s not on shift, he’s often out on the water chasing tuna and marlin, diving for kai to share with friends and whānau. Living off the land and sea is a big part of life for Jake, and it keeps him grounded, focused, and connected to the community he serves.
