The New Zealand Fire Brigades' Institute offers Associate, Member and Fellow diplomas. Public pages explain the pathway; booking and quizzes will deep-link into NZFBI Live when that product is ready.

What you need to know

What are the exams?

  • NZFBI was formed in 1931, and exams in this format have run since 1952.
  • A series of firefighting related topics that give relevant qualifications.

Why would I do them?

  • Improve skills, knowledge and ability as a firefighter.
  • Opportunity to learn and earn a qualification.
  • Assist in upskilling to be able to get a promotion.
  • Post nominal lettering.
  • $250 grant from FENZ for UFBA members for each of the Associate, Member and Fellow diplomas.
  • Help protect your community.

How to do them

  • They are planned to be run twice a year in April and September.
  • No formal entry requirements.
  • Sign up and study.

Practical details

  • Cost: $80 per exam.
  • Time and place: done online.
  • Study material: basic FENZ policy and procedures, plus NZFBI online quizzes and resources.

What do I need to do to get each diploma?

  1. 01

    Associate Diploma

    ANZFBI

    Build foundational technical knowledge and demonstrate your commitment to professional development.

    1. 2 hour multiple choice exam
    2. 2 hour Associate exam
    3. Write an online quiz
    4. Attend a field day

  2. 02

    Member Diploma

    MNZFBI

    Advance your knowledge, leadership and contribution to firefighter education.

    Able to apply to be on the NZFBI Council.

    1. Three hour exam
    2. Hold the minimum of a Crew Leader position or QFF rank
    3. Create and assist running a field day

  3. 03

    Fellow Diploma

    FNZFBI

    Develop and present work that contributes to the advancement of the fire and emergency sector.

    Requires the Associate and Member diplomas first.

    1. Develop a project that will benefit firefighters
    2. Present your project for the benefit of firefighters
